Who cares about gay-marriage! People are dying!

I was looking forward to an interesting political debate between two future candidates the other day. I was hoping to get some insight into their political views so that I can chose wisely when I do my voting-duty as a democratic citizen.

Apparently the most important topic for them was gay-marriage. I mean, we're in the middle of an economy heading straight down and some children can't even have cake. Religion wants to ban evolution theory in school, any complete homocidal nutcase with a 3D-printer will be able to print guns and crime rates in some cities are just insane. But no, let's discuss gay-marriage!

Why is that, why is it such an important thing to be against gay-marriage?

First of all, people care about what's most important to them emotionally, even if those emotions involves what people of the same sex do with each other (people they've never seen and never will see). Secondly, people don't understand the importance of other questions. I mean, if you dedicate a lot of time debating against gay-marriage, you're pretty stupid, brainwashed or religions. See the tautology there?

One thing that baffles me is also the lack of empathy in many of the anti-gay people. If you have some kind of empathy and some imagination, you could easily imagine a gay-couple with real emotions and dreams. They're being bashed as if they weren't humans, and as if they were evil (because god said so).

I think people should stand up for their rights, and that homophobic people needs to understand a few things even if they don't like it. But for the love of god, let's discuss the economy and REAL social issues instead. Gay-marriage-phobia is a bad symptom, but it's by no means an urgent issue. Feel free to debate though, start a demonstration. But don't bring it up for 5 hours between two potential future top candidates on national TV.
